Mount Riley Pinot Gris

(Download the Tasting Note)PinotGris2011

Winemaking: The grapes for this wine were grown in three of Mount Riley's premium vineyards in the heart of the Wairau Valley.  Marlborough's wide diurnal temperature range together with a cool but dry summer led to perfect ripening conditions and resulted in fruit with excellent aromatics, intense flavour and great retention of natural acidity.

We harvested the fruit at night in cool temperatures to preserve the wonderful flavours and aromatics.  The grapes were gently pressed and the juice settled prior to fermentation.  A small proportion (7%) was fermented in barrel to accentuate texture and complexity in the wine.  The remainder was fermented in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures to retain the bright, varietal aromatics.

Colour: Pale straw.
Bouquet: Complex characters of Nashi Pear, rose petal, spices and fresh almonds.
Palate: The wine is just off-dry with ripe fruit flavours and rich texture.  A complex and elegant wine.
Drink: Drinking well now, this wine can be enjoyed late until 2015. Great  with white meat, veal, Asian food and cheeses and dried fruits for dessert.

2010

Winemaking: The grapes for this wine were grown in three of Mount Riley's premium vineyards in the heart of the Wairau Valley.  Marlborough's wide diurnal temperature range together with a cool but dry summer led to perfect ripening conditions and resulted in fruit with excellent aromatics, intense flavour and great retention of natural acidity.

Grapes were crushed and destemmed prior to pressing and about 95% of the juice was fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatics.  The balance was fermented in seasoned oak barrels by indigenous yeasts, to add extra complexity and texture to blend.  The wine then spent 4 months on lees to build palate weight.

Colour: Pale straw.
Bouquet: Poached pear, quince and apple crumble aromas are supported by  perfumed floral, spice & honeysuckle characters.
Palate: The wine is just off-dry with ripe fruit flavours and rich texture.  A complex and elegant wine.
Drink: Drinking well now, this wine can be enjoyed late until 2013. Great  with white meat, veal, Asian food and cheeses and dried fruits for dessert.

Vintage
2009

Winemaking: Marlborough's weather at both bud burst and fruit set was ideal in the 2009 growing year resulting in large potential crops.  Mount Riley performed a great deal of work in its vineyards to reduce crop levels and ensure quality over quantity.  Warm days and cool nights helped build excellent aromatics while retaining great natural acidity.  From March right through to the end of our harvest at Mount Riley, Mother Nature was kind to us - we had virtually no rain and were able to pick when flavour and aromas were at their peak.

Our 2009 Pinot Gris is made from grapes grown in two of Mount Riley's premium vineyards in the heart of the Wairau Valley region of Marlborough.  Grapes were crushed and destemmed prior to pressing and fermentation was carried out in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the lifted aromatics in this wine.  It then spent 4 months on lees to build pallet weight and complexity.

Colour: Pale straw.
Bouquet: Fruity pear, citrus and green apple is supported by perfumed floral & unctuous honeysuckle characters.
Palate: Fruity flavours are paramount in this off-dry, full bodied wine.  A complex and elegant wine.
Drink: Drinking well now, this wine can be enjoyed late until 2012. Great  with white meat, veal, Asian food and cheeses and dried fruits for dessert.

Winemaking
Our 2007/8 growing season was warm but with higher than normal rain post flowering.  This rain fall elevated crop levels.  The warm days and cool evenings assisted the grapes to reach desired acid and sugar levels.  At harvest the grapes had intense flavours, and a period of rain during harvest caused our fruit to be harvested quickly to avoid disease.  These grapes were unaffected by adverse weather and were harvested in pristine condition at perfect physiological ripeness.  The grapes for this wine were sourced from two of Mount Riley's vineyards in the heart of the Wairau valley region of Marlborough.

Our grapes were crushed and destemmed prior to pressing and fermentation was induced by the introduction of carefully selected yeast strains.  We fermented our fruit in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures to preserve the lifted aromatics in this wine.  This Pinot Gris spent two months on lees prior to bottling.

Winemaking
Temperatures in our Pinot Gris vineyards during the 2006 growing season were ideal with warm temperatures and cool nights.  Cooler conditions as we approached harvest allowed grapes to be left on vine to develop complex flavours.  The grapes in this wine are from two of Mount Riley’s vineyards in the heart of the Wairau Valley region of Marlborough. These grapes were crushed and destemmed prior to pressing and fermentation was carried out in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Our wine then spent 4 months on lees.
