John Buchanan, Managing Director
Born in Auckland, and qualified as an accountant, John has deep family roots in Marlborough's Wairau Valley. His Mother was born there and John spent many holidays on his grandparents’ farm from a young age, even attending the Wairau Valley Primary School for a term.
John's interest in wine was sparked by a period in London where he worked for the wine importer Rutherford Osborne and Perkins. On returning to New Zealand John was employed by Corbans Wines as Chief Financial Officer. John acted as financial and business adviser of several wine related enterprises and was Director of another Marlborough based winery until setting up Mount Riley.
John's passion for wine is extensive and includes his role as a senior judge at many of New Zealand's premier wine shows and assisting in many other areas of wine assessment.
Outside of work John’s time is centred on his family, with wife Lyn (photographed right with John), daughters Sarah, Katie & Amy and grandchildren Jack, Charlie and Eila. John enjoys sport, beach walking, the gym, Pilates and if time permits, spending time on the golf course. Email: john@mountriley.co.nz
